Unlocking Chelona's Rise on the Moonlight Altar plateau is one of the most intriguing puzzle challenges in Elden Ring. Players who reach this secluded tower are tasked with tracking down three giant phantom tortoises scattered across the zone. Solving this puzzle requires patience, precise navigation, and a strong understanding of how game mechanics affect beast spawns.

Understanding the Chelona's Rise Puzzle Mechanics

Before hunting down the spectral creatures, players must interact with the imp statue directly in front of Chelona's Rise. Reading the pedestal clue activates the spawning mechanism for the three great wise beasts. A critical rule to remember is that fast traveling or resting at a Site of Grace will cause remaining beasts to despawn.

If a tortoise disappears due to resting or traveling, simply return to the tower entrance and read the statue again. Traversing the plateau on Torrent without fast traveling ensures every beast remains visible in its designated spot.

Locating the First Great Wise Beast

The first giant tortoise is situated near the tower itself, making it the easiest target to eliminate right away. Head directly west from Chelona's Rise toward the cliff edge overlooking the lower region. Look over the ledge to find the beast clinging to the vertical rock face.

A simple ranged attack, spell, or well-aimed bow shot will defeat this first creature. Once hit, it vanishes immediately, registering the first step toward breaking the tower's seal.

Finding the Remaining Wise Beasts

The second tortoise rests on a cliff shelf in the far southeastern corner of the Moonlight Altar plateau. Ride along the southern path and look down over the lower ledges to spot it sitting calmly. Strike it from above using ranged spells or arrows to complete the second objective.

The third beast requires looking up into the sky near the northwest section of the plateau, close to Ringleader's Evergaol. You will see the giant tortoise floating high in the air directly above a Spiritspring jump pad. Ride Torrent into the air current to hit the floating beast mid-flight, which breaks the magic barrier permanently.

Claiming Your Reward Inside the Tower

After defeating all three beasts, a notification confirms that the seal on Chelona's Rise has been broken. Return to the tower and ascend the stairs to reach the top balcony chest. Inside, players receive Ranni's Dark Moon, a powerful legendary sorcery that inflicts heavy damage and reduces enemy magic negation.
